Poetry Series: Day 5

Welcome back for the fifth day of the 7-day Poetry Series on grief and loss. I told a friend yesterday that the next time I decide to commit to a weeklong series, maybe I should pick something light-hearted, because woo this is getting heavy. Necessary but heavy. Here’s the thing though, we do need to give space to our emotions. If we’re feeling sad, let’s own it and accept and allow it. If we’re feeling top-of-the-moon joyful, let’s own it and accept it and allow it. Emotions are allowed. They are a healthy and vital part of the human experience. God designed us with these intricate and complex thought patterns and brain responses and amen because we get to FEEL. What a gift. Sometimes our emotions, while allowed, are difficult to navigate all by ourselves. Talking things out with a family member or friend or pastor, those are great methods and they may help tremendously. But if you feel like you need more support or to dig a little deeper as you walk through the trenches, please know that professional help is healthy. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you need to seek out a counselor or other mental health professional, please feel no shame. Please know that you are doing something good for yourself. Taking control of your mental health is not for the broken—it is for the brave.

Therapy

I sank into the couch
Took a deep breath
Sent a text to Amber

I think it’s time, I said.
I’m going to make an appointment
to talk to someone.

Her reply came quickly,
Just one perfect line—
I AM SO PROUD OF YOU.
